Japanese shakuhachi master Christopher Yohmei Blasdel and Sasha Bogdanowitsch make their Atherton debut with an evening of songs played on the shakuhachi and pan drum. Though classically trained in the disciplined tradition of shakuhachi (Japanese end-blown flute), Christopher Yohmei Blasdel uses that background as a launching point for techniques that are hardly conventional. Blasdel employs techniques that stretch the sonic palette of an otherwise simple instrument, and sometimes uses it percussively as well as melodically. He will be accompanied by pan drum player Sasha Bogdanowitsch, producing music that is both haunting and expressive. The musicians may borrow from Japanese themes and traditions in their performance, but this will not be a traditional Japanese music concert; instead it will be a unique sonic experience available nowhere else and will appeal to shakuhachi aficionados and the simply curious alike.
